The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), while the X-shaped St. Andrew's cross focuses on the Scottish-Presbyterian roots of the church.  The cross also stresses the laity and evangelism, with which St. Andrew was associated.
